Assistance League of Kansas City History

  • April, 1983 - Organized as a Guild, the first step in becoming a chapter of National Assistance League.
  • January 1984 - I’M IN CHARGE program adopted to teach elementary students how to be safe in emergency and non-emergency situations. 
  • June, 1986 - Assistance League of Kansas City Northland was chartered in ceremonies at William Jewell College in Liberty by National Assistance League President, Janet Boyer.
  • November, 1988 - OPERATION HUG program adopted to provide teddy bears to comfort children and elderly people in crisis.
  • November, 1991 - Heartland Auxiliary was formed as an auxiliary group and established OPERATION FOSTER CHILD, a program to help children in foster care whose families were unable to provide the things that would help their educational, physical, emotional or social development.
  • August, 1992 - OPERATION SCHOOL BELL® program adopted to provide needy and at risk elementary and middle school students with new clothing and shoes, personal care items and a new book.
  • April, 1993 - The OUTREACH program adopted to facilitate response to various needs in our community on a seasonal or short term basis.
  • December, 1994 - Organization name becomes Assistance League of Kansas City.
  • February, 1997 - ASSAULT SURVIVOR KITS®  program adopted to provide personal care items for sexual assault victims seen in hospital emergency rooms.
  • August, 1997 - THE ReSALE SHOP was opened to provide better and more consistent funding for our philanthropic programs.
  • August, 1999 - Assisteens® Auxiliary, our teenage service learning group, was certified by Assistance League.
  • May, 2000 - Groundbreaking for Administrative Center located at 6101 N Chestnut.
  • December, 2000 - Moved into new Administrative Center building.
  • March, 2001 - Dedicated new Administrative Center.
  • August, 2002 - Moved THE ReSALE SHOP to a larger space.
  • May, 2004 - Purchased property adjacent to Administrative Center for further expansion of our facility and programs.
  • May, 2004 - Christmas ornament, especially designed for us by Christopher Radko, created and offered as a fund raiser.
  • May, 2009 - SENIOR OUTREACH SERVICE program adopted to provide support and friendship to residents of senior care facilities in our community.
  • May 2012 - Assisteens BIRTHDAY/CELEBRATION BAGS, a program provide a party in a bag to children living in a shelter, was adopted.
  • April, 2012 - WASTE NOT, a program to recognize the contributions of THE ReSALE SHOP to other non-profits, was adopted.
  • November 2012 - BEST FOOT FORWARD, a program to those entering or re-entering the job market, was adopted.
  • April, 2013 - THE ReSALE SHOP moved to its fourth location at 6601 N. Oak Trafficway, Gladstone, MO.
  • November, 2013 - Capital Campaign drive began.
  • January, 2015 - Successful completion of $1M Capital Campaign.
  • May, 2015 - BIRTHDAY/CELEBRATION BAGS program renamed OPERATION CELEBRATION to increase the scope and service of the program and better serve the needs of the Assisteens Auxiliary in managing the program.
  • June 2016 - Began year-long celebration of organization's 30th year as a chapter of National Assistance League.  Several member and community celebratory events were held.
  • August, 2016 - BEST FOOT FORWARD was reinstated as a program.
  • January, 2017 - National Operation School Bell award was presented to the Linscomb Foundation.
